Don Carlo at Everton
Time for a hot take: Ancelotti’s appointment at Everton will end up being a case where a good manager isn’t necessarily the right manager.
If you look at Ancelotti’s last few jobs — Napoli/Bayern/Real Madrid/PSG/Chelsea — he’s essentially come in and managed the egos at the super clubs.
This Everton squad is better than their performances have been this season, but I don’t think Carlo’s the type of manager who will be able to bridge the talent gap to the Champions League clubs with a well-coached, tactically impressive side.
There was loads of stuff from his time at Bayern about how shite his training sessions were and he’s essentially inherited superstar players everywhere he’s been over the last decade, rather than assembling and building and progress clubs to the next tier.
People love to jizz their pants over big name managers but I don’t think this’ll end up being much different to West Ham appointing Manuel Pellegrini, which hasn’t worked out.
It’s another situation where judgements are made based on reputation rather than thinking about how a manager’s skillset marries up with the squad/what sort of job it is.
Everton have been ambitious with this appointment, but I can’t help thinking that Duncan Ferguson will be ripping off his shirt to make snow angels on the touchline at Goodison Park by February 2022 at the latest.
